Multi-pet discounts feel like a no-brainer until you do the math. A flat "20% off the second pet" sounds friendly and quietly destroys your margin on the most labor-intensive houses. The right approach is structured, fixed-dollar, and earns its keep.
20% off a $95 groom is $19. But the second dog in the same house doesn’t cost you 20% less to groom — it costs you nothing extra in setup/teardown/drive but the same labor at the table. So the discount has to come from the saved-overhead bucket, not the labor bucket. Otherwise you’re paying yourself less per hour for the second pet, which is exactly backwards.
$5 off the second pet, $10 off the third+. Period. The discount equals the genuine savings (no second drive, no second setup) and not a penny more. It’s easy to explain, doesn’t scale wildly with ticket size, and protects your hourly rate on the most demanding houses.
| Pet count | Discount per additional pet | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 pet | $0 | Standard pricing |
| 2 pets | $5 off the 2nd | Same household, same visit |
| 3 pets | $5 + $10 = $15 total off | Diminishing returns on labor |
| 4+ pets | Flat $20 off the visit | Custom quote at this point |
The houses with four dogs are usually the houses where any discount past $20 starts costing you the next stop on your route.
A 4-pet house is roughly 4 hours of labor for a discounted ticket of ~$300. That’s $75/hr — below the rate of a single solo groom on a tight route. The discount only makes sense if it locks in repeat bookings (it usually does) or if the house is in your most efficient zone (often the case).
For 3+ pet households, consider a flat monthly multi-pet rate that includes recurring grooms. Predictable revenue, locked density, and the client perceives meaningful savings. See our membership program guide for the structure.
Frame the discount as "we save the drive, you save on the second appointment." Never frame it as "we’re willing to do the second one cheap." Words matter. Devaluing your own labor in the framing is how operators end up trapped at low prices.
Pair this with sensible zone pricing so multi-pet houses far from base still pencil out.
Animal Friends OS supports tiered multi-pet discounts at the booking level, so the math is automatic and the conversation is simple. See grooming software.
