If you've ever been confused about the difference between a "bath" and a "full groom," you're not alone. Grooming menus are full of jargon, and the pricing can be wildly different for what looks like the same service. Here's a clear breakdown of what each actually includes at Animal Friends Pet Care.
What's included in a bath package
Our bath package is designed to keep your dog clean, smell great, and maintain basic hygiene between full grooms. It includes:
- Premium pet-safe shampoo tailored to coat type
- Conditioner rinse and deep-clean
- Full blow-dry with a high-velocity dryer (removes loose undercoat)
- Ear cleaning with veterinary solution
- Nail trim (and file if needed)
- Sanitary trim (around private areas)
- Paw pad trim
- Nose-to-tail wellness check
What a bath does NOT include: a haircut or body trim. It's cleaning and hygiene only — your dog's coat length doesn't change.
What's included in a full groom
A full groom includes EVERYTHING from the bath package, PLUS:
- Breed-specific or custom haircut with clippers and scissors
- Face shaping and detail work
- Skirt trimming (legs, tail, feet)
- Extra time for drying and styling
- Final brush-out and finishing
A full groom takes significantly longer — usually 2–3 hours vs. 1–2 hours for a bath. That's why it costs more.
Which does my dog need?
Here's our rule of thumb:
- Short-coated dogs (lab, beagle, boxer): just baths — they don't need haircuts
- Double-coated dogs (golden retriever, husky, german shepherd): baths + occasional de-shed, no haircuts
- Curly or long-coated dogs (poodle, doodle, yorkie, shih tzu): full grooms every 4–8 weeks plus baths in between
- Wire-coated dogs (schnauzer, terrier): full grooms every 6–8 weeks, hand-stripping optional
The "in-between bath" hack
Many clients get a full groom every 6–8 weeks and a bath package in between. This keeps the dog looking sharp and smelling clean without paying for a full haircut every month. FurPlan members get this exact structure built in: 2 baths per month included, 50% off full grooms when they need one.
